while serving as an Assistant District Attorney in Laredo,
Carlos Barrera faced a difficult choice.
Although a life-long Democrat, Carlos feared that the Democratic candidate the local party bosses had picked for DA was vulnerable to corruption. Carlos decided to put the integrity of the DA’s office and the good of his community above partisanship and ran as an independent candidate for District Attorney.
Despite strong opposition from the local establishment, Carlos ran a hard, grassroots campaign and garnered 45% of the vote in Webb County.
Carlos’ concerns about the DA’s office proved well founded when several members of the DA’s staff and family were convicted in federal court for selling drug cases out of the DA’s office in the 1990s.

as the only candidate with experience both as a prosecutor and a defender, and the only candidate who is Board Certified in criminal law, Carlos Barrera is running for Judge, County Court at Law 8 to bring that same passion for standing up for justice and serving the community to the bench.
